If you make long-form content — documentaries, sleep stories, ambient videos — YouTube's upload limits matter. Here are the current limits and how to get around the default cap.
The limits
These limits are documented in YouTube Help ('Upload videos longer than 15 minutes'). They can change, so check the live article if you're close to either limit.
- Unverified accounts: videos up to 15 minutes
- Verified accounts: up to 12 hours or 256 GB per video, whichever comes first
How to unlock long uploads
Verify your account in YouTube Studio or at youtube.com/verify, usually with a phone number. Once verified, the 15-minute cap is lifted. It can take a little while to apply, and in some cases YouTube asks for additional verification. Do this before your first long upload, not the day you plan to publish.
Will a 10-hour video fit in 256 GB?
Usually, easily. Narrated videos built from images compress very well because most frames change slowly. A 1080p video at a typical bitrate of 5–8 Mbps is roughly 2–4 GB per hour, so a 10-hour video is around 20–40 GB — well under 256 GB. The 12-hour limit is the one you're more likely to hit.
Tips for uploading multi-hour videos
- Upload from a wired connection or upload server-to-server — a dropped connection on a 30 GB file is painful
- Use MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio, YouTube's recommended settings
- Expect processing to take a while; HD versions appear after the SD version
- Add chapters (timestamps in the description starting at 0:00) so viewers can navigate
- Watch the last few minutes of the processed video before you make it public
Skipping the download-and-reupload step
For long videos, the slowest part of publishing is often moving the file: download it from your render tool, then upload it again to YouTube. DreamTuber can publish a finished video straight to your connected YouTube channel with its title, description, and tags, so the multi-gigabyte file never passes through your computer.
